One of the things that iOS 8 brings to the table is an open door to App Developers to access the manual controls for the camera. Well it didn’t take long for Apps to appear in the App Store that take advantage of this new capability. “Manual” is just such an App. This App allows you full control over your image by allowing you to “manually” set the shutter speed, ISO, white

balance, focus and exposure bracketing. It even has a pretty cool “live” histogram that I must admit when I first saw it, I thought it was an audio meter. If you were shooting a challenging scene (such as a bright window in the background) with a DSLR, you could switch to manual and set your shutter speed and ISO. Now you have the same flexibility on your iPhone.

The interface is pretty straight forward and it definitely let’s me do exactly what I want when it comes to exposure control. The only thing I don’t seem to be able to control on my iPhone 5s is aperture. I see it displayed as 2.2, but it’s greyed out and that may be that on the iPhone 5s you can’t change it? Not sure. Otherwise the app does all that it claims to do and you can even switch between automatic and manual within the app.

You can get Manual here from the iTunes.

Having another streaming content option is usually a good thing. I’ve got Netflix, Slingplayer, HBO Go and various TV station Apps. There is no shortage of things to watch on the go. When I saw the announcement for the Amazon Instant Video App I downloaded it immediately. I figured that since I already pay for Amazon Prime, I might as well take advantage of this benefit. I just

got a chance to play with the App and it does the kinds of things I expected right off the bat. I signed in with my Amazon credentials and I was presented with a display of available TV shows and movies for instant streaming. So far so good. I randomly picked an episode of Fringe to watch and the quality was decent. Again, this is all good, but…

Trouble in paradise…

While the App performed as I expected, I was completely dismayed to find out that it only worked via WiFi. That’s right, no 3G/4G cellular support. While you can watch any videos that you’ve downloaded, you can’t stream anything once you step outside the range of a WiFi Network. This seems like a huge step backwards in 2013. In the early days many apps were restricted from streaming over 3G because AT&T was the only network that supported the iPhone and AT&T/Apple feared that millions of streaming customers would bring the network to its knees. However, those days have long gone since the iPhone is available now on several carriers. Also since most carriers charge for a certain amount of data use each month, users are careful not to do a ton of streaming unless their plans support it. I think that it’s very shortsighted of Amazon to limit their App this way. Perhaps put up a warning when I user starts a stream over cellular data and then once the user taps OK they’re on their own. The other problem (and this is not just an Amazon problem) is that the App doesn’t support AirPlay. So If I understand this correctly, I have to be on my WiFi network to enjoy the App, and since I’m home on my network I can’t even enjoy the show on my big screen HDTV? With these limitations, this will not be my goto App.

If you have an Amazon Prime account or you’ve purchased downloadable movies via Amazon, then the App is probably worth having on your device. However, the WiFi requirement and lack of AirPlay/HDMI out support will make it a limited experience.

If there’s one question that I get asked a lot, more than any other as a matter of fact, it’s “how do you keep finding Apps to review?”. I started thinking about that question today as I was thinking about what I wanted to say about this App. The truth is, I don’t go looking for Apps “just to review” usually. For the most part the Apps that I review are Apps that I have found to solve a problem. After all, if it doesn’t solve a problem, what good is it really? Recently I started the process of moving into my new town

home. Before I moved even the first thing in though, I decided that I wanted to paint things to make it feel more like home, more mine from day one. I headed over to the hardware store to start looking at colors and quickly realized that I had no idea what color I wanted. So, being me, I immediately went to my iPhone for help. What I found is quite possibly THE best iPhone App for anyone planning on painting anything in their home. Colorsmart not only helps you find your paint color, it helps you calculate how much paint you will need, and lets you preview it on a wide assortment of example rooms. These rooms aren’t simulated digital representations of rooms, rather they are photos of actual rooms. Even though this is an App about house paint, the design, quality, and execution make it an App for other developers to strive to emulate.

Find Your Color
First and foremost this App is about getting you the right color for your project. Whether you’re painting a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen or barn, Behr Colorsmart is the perfect App to help identify the right color for you. There are a few different options to find the correct color. The first option is to use the Explore Color tab. This pulls up a palette of every color that Behr offers. Choose your desired color family,  the color style (muted, pure, or shaded), and the specific hue. When you have made your selection Colorsmart shows you not only the paint name and number, but it also shows you complimenting colors, and offers to show you a preview of it. This is TRULY a well thought out App.

Have a color that you want to match? Not a problem! use your iPhone’s industry leading camera to take a photo, or choose a photo from your photo library. Once your image is loaded pinch to zoom in to the specific area that you would like to match and simply tap on the area. Colorsmart will bring up that color from the Behr line of paints, again with the name and Behr number. Once you have chosen your color, save it to favorites by tapping the icon in the upper right hand corner for future reference.

Once you’ve chosen your colors, the last thing to figure out before you head to the store to purchase it, is how much paint you will need. Behr has you covered there too! Under the More tab at the bottom of the screen, you will find a Paint calculator that will help you determine exactly how many gallons you’re going to need to finish your project!
The Bottom Line
This App has it all! As you can see from the screen shots and the description, this App has it all; great UI, in depth functionality, and extreme usefulness! If you’re planning a painting project any time soon, you need this App. Colorsmart will help you save time, get the perfect color, and buy the correct amount of paint. It’s truly one of the most useful Apps I’ve ever seen.
You can get Behr Colorsmart for your iOS device from the iTunes store for free here:

LodgeNet provides the hotel TV service for many of the hotels in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Miami and Seattle. Unfortunately although you have a choice in hotels, you don’t really have a choice in hotel entertainment systems. However, if you do happen to stay in a property that has LodgeNet and you have an iOS device (this is a Universal app) with internet access you can use it to control your TV, get information about the hotel you’re staying in and if the service allows you can even check out the r

oom service and other services. Of course you can also order video on demand right from your iOS device.
Works in San Francisco
I’m traveling on business this week and I got to my room last night. I had downloaded the LodgeNet App a while ago, but this was the 1st time that I was in a property that supports it. I may have been in one before, but I don’t always turn on the hotel TV when I travel. During my channel surfing I saw the ad for the App and remembered that I already had it. So I decided to give it a try. You pair the App with your current room’s TV by displaying the code (I imagine it changes with each new guest) on the TV from the entertainment menu. Key that code into the App on your device and you’re all set. From that point on you can use the touch screen on your iDevice to change channels, control the volume and order video on demand content. It’s simple and it works, but it could be so much more. As a TV remote it’s cool, but not a killer App. However, if it tied into things like ordering room service, making reserations at hotel restaurants, etc., ordering car services/taxis, summoning the bellhop, unlocking the door when you return to the room, wakeup calls, digital do-not-disturb signs, etc. then the App would be infinitely more usable. As it stands the App works as advertised, but it would be nice to see it go way beyond TV control.

I love 360° Panoramas. I used to create QuickTime VRs back in the day. I still like to use them in my digital publishing documents for tablets. What I never expected to have was an easy way to create them directly on my iPhone or iPad. That’s where 360 Panorama comes in. This App is an interactive 360° panorama creation tool right on your device.
Simply bring up the App and you get a grid of the world around you to align on. Tap to snap the 1st shot and then simply turn left or right a little and the next shot gets taken automatically. Just keep turning until you captured the

entire scene or until you stop the capture. The App will automatically stich the scene together and render it.
You can either output a rendered 360° to the cloud and share it with friends via email, Twitter or Facebook or your can export a flattened pano to the camera roll or email. If something gets in the way, sadly there is no way to edit it out. You’ll either have to take the shot over again or start over. Of course on a flattened version you can edit it in your favorite editing App such as Photoshop and clone out the thing that got in the way.
Here’s a sample one I did in Copenhagen on the way to my event. As you can see my buddy Jason walked through one of the shots.
This is amazing technology for the very low cost of entry. You can create good looking panos in the matter of a couple of minutes. I’d like to see a “re-take” button on the interace, but otherwise it’s hard to find things to complain about.

We review a lot of Apps over here at BAS. Often times we are given recommendations by friends, family, or your guys reading. The other (and most common way for me) that we come upon new Apps is by the desire to make our lives easier in some way. I was getting my hair cut at the local GreatClips a few weeks ago and after waiting in line for almost 20 minutes I was thinking to myself that there should be a way to check in before you got there so that you could spend your waiting time doing what you wanted instead of sitting in a chair watching other people get their hair cut. Little did I

know that GreatClips already had an App to do just what I wanted! After talking with Laura (my favorite stylist) and voicing my idea, she informed me that GreatClips was already ahead of me in thinking this and the App was already available.  Since then I’ve taken the twins in for their cuts and I have been back for a cut, using the App each of those times. I can’t tell you how nice it is to not have to wait in line more than 5 minutes after arriving. With 5 year old twins this especially awesome because they have a short attention span.

What You Get
The GreatClips App is another one of those specific Apps that has one purpose, but it performs that task really, really well. The first thing that caught my eye when I launched GC was the really well laid out and thoughtful user interface. You are immediately sent to the map part of the App showing you the closest stores to your location as well as the estimated wait time. If you aren’t looking for a salon near your current location you are able to type in an address at the top of the screen to find locations close to your desired location. Once you’ve decided the area and the specific location that you want to have your cut done, you simply tap that location to access the check in screen.

From here you enter your name, phone number, and number of guests. You can also access the salon info including directions, store hours, location name, and phone number. One request that I noticed multiple times in the comments in the iTunes store was a list of who was working that day. Many people like to have their hair cut by the same person every time so this kind of information would be useful. Once you’ve entered your information into the check in screen you simply tap the “check me in” button. You will be given a confirmation screen with a little more information.

Click done and you are taken back to the map page where you see the store that you’re checked into. Instead of a “check in” message above the store, there is now a “cancel” button. If for any reason you’re going to be longer than your wait time, or you decide to not get your hair cut, it’s a good idea to go back and click cancel.

The Bottom Line
If you use GreatClips for your hair cuts, there is no reason that you shouldn’t be using this App. it’s free, it keeps you from waiting in line, and it’s super simple to use. I’ll definitely never wait in line for my hair cuts again.

Have you ever wished that there was a speed dial for anything on your iPhone? Have you ever wished that with one tap of a button you could quickly launch right to a Tweet, or to post a Facebook status? Of course you have. We all have! Now, with Launch Center, you can do those things and more! I first stumbled upon this App when searching for ways to increase the functionality of the notification center in iOS5. What I found within this App will make your iPhone infinitely more efficient. Read on to see how.

What it does
Launch center lets you launch tasks, web

sites, specific actions within Apps as well as the top level of the App. It also lets you launch new emails, text messages, or phone calls to specific people. You can also launch the flashlight, as well as Google the contents of your clipboard.
Post to Facebook and Tweet bypass the need to navigate through the respective Apps to find the "post" or "tweet" areas and launches directly into a new message or post. The same thing Applies to emails, and text messages. It truly is a "speed dial" for everything.
Do you launch a particular website on a regular basis (like BestAppSite)? There's a spot for that too! Yes, Safari has built in favorites, but to access them you have to first launch Safari, then select the favorites tab. With Launch Center These favorite websites will be right alongside of your other most commonly used tasks. The same thought process applies to placing speed dials of your most often used numbers in Launch Center. Having everything in one common place makes it fast and easy to use.

What About Apps
This is where Launch Center really shines. As you can see I have placed Launch Center in my dock so I can access it no matter what page I'm on in my iPhone. From within Launch Center I have set up my most frequently used Apps like Navigon, and Instagram. Yes, Instagram is on my front page but through Launch Center, I open directly to the camera and not my feed. As for Navigon, placing it in Launch Center lets me put the actual Navigon App within a folder and not have to worry about drilling down into folders and sub-folders to launch it. Currently not every (okay, not even close to every) App is available to Add to Launch Center but the major ones are and the list grows literally every single day.

The Bottom Line
Launch Center will make your iPhone a lot more streamlined and efficient. Think of it as a Speed Dial for everything! The App list is growing every day and as it does so will the ways to use this custom Launch Center for your iPhone.

By now you've probably seen the movie Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol or at least the trailer. In one of the scenes Tom Cruise seeming barely escapes death by a flying car that crashes to the ground right behind him. We all know that these effects are often done with green screen and CGI, but what if you could do these kind of effects right on your iPhone with a few taps of your finger. That's exactly what Action Movie FX allows you to do. You fire up the App, choose your effect, record your scene in the App and then choose where in your clip's timeline you want the

effect to happen. Tap a button to process the video and you're done! The saved movie will be 720p resolution even on an iPhone 4s that can record in 1080p.
Here's one that I did last night while setting up for my event

I was blown away by the quality of the overlay considering that I had to do absolutely no keying on my own. What's even more amazing is that the App is FREE! Once you have your processed video you can save it to your Camera Roll, Send it via email or post it on Facebook right from the App. Of course once it's on your Camera Roll you can upload it to just about any other service or App such as YouTube. The App comes with three scenes, "Missile Attack", "Car Smash" and "Demolition Rock". There is an option to do an in-app purchase to buy more effects. However, to date I've not been able to get the store to load in the App. Once it does I'll gladly buy some more effects at $0.99 each.
UPDATE: The FX store finally loaded in the App and there are 4 more "2 Packs" of effects to choose from (8 total effects) at $0.99 per 2 pack.
